Catch-up and the TV guide (EPG), explained

Two features make an IPTV player feel like real television: a guide that shows what is on, and catch-up that lets you watch what has already been broadcast. Here is how they work and why they are not on every channel.

What is the TV guide (EPG)?

EPG stands for electronic programme guide: the grid of channels and times that shows what is on now and next. In an IPTV player the guide is not part of the channel itself. It arrives as separate data, usually from your provider or from a guide source linked to your playlist.

That is why a channel can play perfectly and still show “No information available”: its guide data is missing, or is not matched to that channel. Nura updates the guide on a schedule you choose in Settings > EPG, and you can update it by hand from the same screen.

What is catch-up?

Catch-up (also called timeshift or archive) lets you play a programme that has already finished, or start the current programme again from the beginning. It works only where your provider records the channel and keeps the recording for a number of days. Nura cannot create catch-up for a channel the provider does not archive.

  • In the guide, channels and programmes that can be replayed are marked, so you know before you press play.
  • Pick a past programme in the guide and press OK to watch it from the start.
  • If a replay starts at the wrong time, Settings > EPG has a catch-up offset (in hours) to correct a provider whose clock differs from yours.

Pause and rewind live TV

Separately from catch-up, Nura can pause and rewind a live channel for a short while, so you can step away and carry on, or go back a few minutes to see something again.

If the guide is empty or wrong

  • Update the guide in Settings > EPG > Update EPG and wait for it to finish; a large guide can take a minute or two.
  • If every programme is an hour out, change the EPG offset.
  • If one channel has no guide but its neighbours do, the provider's guide simply does not cover it.
  • You can add another guide source in Settings > EPG > EPG Sources for channels your provider's guide is missing.

Guide and catch-up quality depend on your provider. Nura shows what the provider supplies and does its best to match it to your channels.
